  • PE Pipe
  • External Control Box
  • Mechanical Stop End
  • Internal Meter Adaptor
  • Ducting & Pipe Insulation
  • Tracing Mesh or Warning Tape

The Process of New Water Main Pipe Installation

For the installation of a new water main pipe, our experts follow this streamlined process:

  • Remove the blank plug and screw in the new water meter.
  • Pass the pipe through a solid duct to take it outside your property’s boundary.
  • Install an external control box in a hard-standing area near your property’s exterior wall.
  • Line and fill the trench with fine granular backfill or selected soft earth.
  • Install marker tape almost halfway up between the service pipe and the finished ground level.

Important Guidelines & Recommendations

Pipe Materials

It is recommended to use blue MDPE pipes for the installation of new water mains in normal ground conditions. On the other hand, a barrier pipe that complies with BS8588 must be used in contaminated grounds or where the supply pipe is in close proximity to an oil or petrol source. 25mm is the standard diameter of the pipe that should be used during installation.

Blue MDPE plastic pipes are suggested for underground uses, and black MDPE pipes can be used for above-ground sections. These pipes should comply with BS EN 12201.

Pipe Installation

  • The supply pipe should be diverted away from areas or regions where contamination risk persists.
  • The water pipe must be located inside a suitable duct for easy access from the point where it enters a property.
  • The ideal diameter for ducting is 110mm, and it should not be less than 65mm.
  • The material of ducting should be plastic with solid construction, and there should be no marks for other utilities on it.
  • The laying depth for a duct should be 750mm to 1350mm below your property’s finished ground level. The duct should run all the way through your property until the point where the internal stop valve is present.
  • The duct should be sealed from the internal and external sides with a removable seal or sealant.
  • It is recommended to use one continuous length of pipe so that there are no joints.
  • If a joint is required to be installed with a new water supply pipe, a chamber and lid should be fitted with it to detect leakages in a timely manner.
  • Trenches should be wide enough that pipework can be easily installed inside them while maintaining at least 350mm distance from other utilities.
  • The lining and backfilling of trenches must be done with sand or soft earth.
  • The pipe should be insulated at the point where it enters the property to make it watertight.
  • The stop valve should be installed close to the point of the pipe entering the building and located above floor level.
  • The suitable standards for screw-down valves and lever valves, which should be used as stop valves, are BS1010 and BS EN107401:2000, respectively.

FAQs

If the land where the pipe is being laid is contaminated, a barrier pipe must be installed with the water main pipe.

Your new water connection will probably be on the footpath or road outside your property’s boundary. Moreover, it should not be laid within 2m of bus stops, large trees, traffic or street lights, or any other common utilities.

For the safe installation of new water main pipes, all work must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.

Reclaimed land and vehicle workshop sites are classified as contaminated grounds where barrier pipes should be installed while making new water connections.
